Montessori Activity: Multiplication Finger Working Charts



Clockwise: Equation slip box, answer tiles, Montessori Multiplication Finger Working Charts 3, 4 & 5.

Age: From 5.5-6 years

Objective(s): 

The memorization of the tables in multiplication. The various charts give the possibility of repetition, which helps to fix these in the memory of the child.

Materials:

1. The Montessori Multiplication Charts 3, 4, 5
2. 1 box of multiplication equation slips.
3. 1 empty box
4. A paper, pencil & eraser
5. 1 tray

Presentation 1: Multiplication Chart 3 - Finger chart with all the products from 1-10


1. Choose an equation slip from the box, read and write it on the piece of paper, e.g. 5 x 4 = ?

2. Place your right index finger on the blue 5 at the top of the board.

3. Place your left index finger on the red 4 on the side of the board.

4. Run your right finger down and your left finger to the right until the two fingers meet.


5. Say, “5 x 4 is 20.”

6. Write the answer on the piece of paper and read it.

7. Place the used equation slip into the empty box.

8. Choose another equation slip from the slip box and repeat in similar manner from step 1-7.

9. Invite your child to try.

Presentation 2: Multiplication Chart 4 - Finger chart with duplicate answers removed




1. Choose an equation slip from the slip box, read and write it on a piece of paper, e.g. 3 x 10 = ?

2. Read and write down the equation on the piece of paper.

3. Place your right index finger on the 3 and place your left index finger on the 10.

4. Move your right index finger out as far as it can go to the last number on its row.

5. Move your right finger down to the same row as the left finger.

6. Run your left index finger to the right to meet your right index finger.

7. Write the answer on the piece of paper and read it.

8. Place the used equation slip into the empty box.

9. Choose another equation slip from the slip box and repeat in similar manner from step 1-7.

10. Invite your child to try.

3. Place your right index finger on the 3 (denoted by the pencil).

 

4. Move your right index finger out as far as it can go to the last number on its row and


place your left index finger on the 10.


5. Move your right finger down (denoted by the pencil) to the same row as the left finger. (denoted by the eraser)


6. Run your left index finger (denoted by the eraser) to the right to meet your right index finger (denoted by the pencil).


7. Write the answer on the piece of paper and read it.

Presentation 3: Multiplication Chart 5 - Blank Multiplication Chart also called "The Bingo Chart"


1. Take out all of the tiles and place them in numerical order. If there is more than one of the same tile, place it on top of the other to make a stack. These should also be placed in lines of units, teens, 20’s, 30’s, etc…

2. Take an equation slip from the box and read it e.g. 4 x 6 = ?

3. Read and write down the equation on a piece of paper.

4. Place your right index finger on the blue 4 and your left index finger on the red 6.

5. As in Presentation 1, run your fingers to meet. Hold the spot with your left index finger and using your right hand, place the correct answer tile on the spot.

6. Write down the answer on the piece of paper 4 x 6 = 24 and show your child to check answer using the Control Chart 1 or Multiplication Finger Chart 3.

6. Invite your child to try.
