J Summary (5Y9M19D) - Making Christmas Lacing Card for Grandparents

I bought this Christmas lacing card from Tiger for 20 DKK for our Advent calendar. Our Little FECS opened this today and complete this as a Christmas card for farmor and farfar. He got entangled several times and needed help to unentangle it. He also needed to unstitch a few times, for stitching the needle from the wrong side. But despite this, he was very patience and went on to complete the challenge, which was very well done. It was good fine motor skill training. We will help him to add in the note for farmor and farmor tomorrow at our FMN.

There are some really cute ones from Amazon. The one below is at a reasonable price:

Montessori Activity: Tying Shoelaces

Age: From 5 years old

Activity Duration: 10-15 minutes

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Objective(s):
1. To train the child’s fine motor skills
2. To teach the child to be independent

Materials:
1. 1 pair of shoes unlaced
2. 1 pair of shoelaces
3. 1 tray

Directions:
1. Show your child how to tie his shoe laces and let him try. Trying on the tray makes it easier, as he doesn't have to bend down constantly, while he is practising.

Video Demonstration:

Additional Information:
During the Schools' information meetings that we attended in November, we were told that the schools prefer the kids to know how to tie their shoelaces already.

We have 2 options: 1) Teach J or 2) Buy only velcro schoes. We decided to go for the hard way, as it is always good to learn a skill (but we will still buy velcro shoes for convenience). So here I am, setting up the Montessori Practical Life activity. But we still haven't manage to find the time for J to practise more, although now I am on part-time.

You don't have to buy the expensive Montessori material for lacing. Just use any old shoes.

For teaching 3 years old, how to do lacing, please see lesson plan here:

Updates 2 Jan 2015 (5Y9M28D):
On my day off, I practised tying shoelaces with our Little FECS. Today, he finally mastered it :-)

Montessori Activity: Dressing Basket

Inspired by Counting Coconuts

Age: From 3 years old

Materials:

1. Shirt with buttons
2. Baby-clothing with snappers
3. Sweater with zipper
4. Belt with buckle
5. Shoe with laces
6. Jeans with hook & eye
7. Shoes with velcro
8. Pants with drawstrings (bow)
9. Basket or box

Tips:

Instead of presenting the whole basket, take out each piece of item and demonstrate it on a tray as an activity for younger preschoolers. Thus, the above items will provide 8 activities :-)

Additional Information:

It is not necessary to buy the expensive Montessori dressing frames. Create your own Dressing Basket for your child with real items instead.

Here is a video demonstration by Hapalab:

Warning:

Supervise closely with shoe lace. Remove and store away immediately after activity.

Additional Information:

It is really no need to buy expensive Montessori dressing frames, just use any old or existing shoes with laces. This is a pair of old children's shoes from Gap, which I bought from New York 5 years ago for my nephew. But it wasn't so good a pair of shoes for children, as it was too troublesome to put them on. I didn't know better how to choose good shoes for children at that time, since I didn't have my children of my own. This pair of shoes was recycled back to me, when J was born. However, it is a truly perfect pair of shoes for Montessori lesson!!! Bright contrasting colours, not too big and not too small.

J (2Y4M22D) tried it today 27 July 2012. I guided him which eyelet to thread through. He loves to pull the shoe-laces out of the eyelet. His attention span was very short though, and got bored of it in a few minutes. His attention span is still something that I am trying to work on and praying over. I am wondering whether I am expecting too much. What about your toddler of 2.5 years old? Are they good in paying attention?
