What is Nutritional Yeast? Why Is It So Nutritious?

Nutritional yeast available from Urtehuset or any health store.

Nutritional yeast is a deactivated food product made from the single-celled fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

It is highly popular due to its naturally savory, nutty, and cheesy flavor profile.

For most people looking to lower calories, fat, and cholesterol, nutritional yeast is significantly healthier than cheese.

1. Highly nutritious:

Nutritional yeast is a nutritional powerhouse because it is essentially a super-concentrated dose of cellular nutrients.

When you eat nutritional yeast, you are consuming billions of pure, intact microscopic cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Because these cells are dried down completely and have had all their water removed, you are left with just the core "building blocks" of life: pure protein, cellular fibers, and metabolic vitamins.

It is naturally packed with complete plant-based protein, fiber, and other natural B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, and B6).

2. High-Quality Protein:

Yeast cells are incredibly rich in protein because their cell walls and internal structures require a massive amount of amino acids to function.

• It contains all nine essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own.

• Because it is completely dehydrated, over 50% of the weight of nutritional yeast is pure protein. Just two tablespoons give you the same amount of protein as a large egg or an ounce of beef.

3. Immune-Boosting Fibers (Beta-Glucans):

The cell walls of nutritional yeast contain unique types of carbohydrates called beta-glucans and alpha-mannans.

These specific fibers are highly beneficial for humans because they act as prebiotics, feeding the good bacteria in your gut. Scientific studies have shown that beta-glucans from yeast can bind to immune cells, helping to prime and strengthen your immune system against infections.

4. Trace Minerals:

To grow efficiently, yeast cells act like little sponges, absorbing trace elements from the liquid sugarcane or beet molasses they are raised in. As a result, the final product is naturally loaded with vital minerals like zinc, selenium, manganese, and magnesium, which support everything from cellular repair to thyroid function.

5. Low in Calories, Fats and Cholesterol

Nutritional yeast is exceptionally low in both calories and fat.

Compared to Parmesan Cheese: One tablespoon of Parmesan cheese has about 22 calories and 1.5 grams of fat (mostly saturated). One tablespoon of nutritional yeast has roughly the same calories but triple the protein and almost zero fat.

High Satiety: Because nearly half of its small calorie count comes directly from complete protein and dietary fiber, it helps you feel full and satisfied much longer than processed seasonings.
