Montessori Activity: Static Addition with Golden Beads - Unit Place Value (加法 [jiāfǎ])




AGE: 4.5 to 6 years (after the child has worked with golden beads and plus and equal exercises)

OBJECTIVE(S): To teach counting and addition of the unit place value in a concrete manner.

MATERIALS:

1.     18 unit golden beads

2.     2 felt pieces or colored paper

3.     1 worksheet and a pencil

PRESENTATION:

1.     Lay out the unit golden beads vertically in 2 lines of 9 each on the left of the worksheet.

2.     Have your child read the first question: “4+2=?”

3.     Have your child pick the first addend 4 from the first set of golden beads, count it and place it on the second felt piece.


4.     Have your child pick the second addend 2 from the second set of the golden beads, count it and place it on the second felt piece, making sure that the beads are not taken from the same set of golden beads.


5.     Have the child count the total number of beads: “1,2,3…”

5.     Ask the child write or paste the result onto the equation and say: “4+2=6”.


7.     Return the golden beads to the starting position and encourage your child to try the different combinations from the worksheet.

CONTROL OF ERROR:

1.     Addition Control Chart.

VARIATIONS:

1.     Other materials may be substituted for the bead bars, such as shells, buttons and so on.
