Montessori Activity: Slicing Apple

Idea from Rochelle Coote
Age: From 3 years old

Activity Duration: 5 minutes

Objective(s):

1. To train the child’s fine motor skills
2. To encourage good eating habits.

Materials:

1. 2 apples (1 for you and 1 for your child)
2. 1 apple slicer
3. 1 chopping board

Directions:

1. Demonstrate to your child by pressing down the slicer on the apple to cut it.

2. Then assist your child to hold the slicer correctly.

3. Encourage your child to try.

Additional Information:

I learned this from Rochelle who tried it during one of our Nursery School class at church. The children love this activity, and always look forward to snack time. J (3Y5M1D) tried it for the first time today 6 August 2012 at home, and he couldn't have enough of it. But I have to restrict him as otherwise, the apples would be wasted as we could not eat all of them. I bought the apple slicer from Føtex and it cost 60 DKK.
