Montessori Activity: Static Addition with Lego Brick Number Rods


Age: From 3 years old

Activity Duration: 5 - 15 minutes

Objectives:
1. To teach the concept of addition

Materials:
1. Numeral cards 1 - 10

2. Number rods made of Lego bricks

3. Mathematical signs magnets (if not, you can draw and make your own + and = signs)

Directions:
1. Place the number rods horizontally in front of your child in the order of a staircase.

2. Say, "I am going to show you how to do addition using the number rods.

3. As your child to find rod 2 and put the corresponding numeral card below it.

4. Ask your child to find rod 3 and put the corresponding numeral card below it.

5. Ask your child to use his finger to count carefully each section of the number rod. When he gives the answer "five", explain that 2 + 3 = 5 and insert the "+" and "=" sign into the right location.

6. Let your child try with other combinations.
