AGE: 5.5 years old
OBJECTIVE: To introduce the child to quadruple digit addition
MATERIALS:
1. 2 Colored Bead Stairs (can be substituted with Golden Beads)
2. 9 ten-bars
3. 9 hundred-squares
4. 9 thousand-cubes
5. 1 quadruple digit addition worksheet
6. 5 felt pieces
7. 1 pencil and eraser
PRESENTATION:
1. Arrange the materials according to the picture above.
2. Say, "Today we are going to learn how to add quadruple digit numbers together."
3. Invite your child to read the first equation or you can also read it together, for e.g. 3237+2112=?
4. Point to the unit place value of the first addend in the worksheet and ask, "How many units are there?" Your child should answer 7.
5. Take the 7-white bead stair from the first set of Colored Bead Stairs and place it on the felt piece to the right of the worksheet.
6. Next, point to the ten place value of the first addend and ask, "How many tens are there?" Your child should answer 3 tens.
7. Take 3 ten-bars from the felt piece on the left and place it on the right felt piece to the left of the selected unit beads.
8. Next, point to the hundred place value of the first addend and ask, "How many hundreds are there?" Your child should answer 2 hundreds.
9. Take 2 hundred-squares from the left felt piece and place it on the right felt piece to the left of the selected ten bars.
10. Lastly, point to the thousand place value of the first addend and ask, "How many thousands are there?" Your child should answer 3 thousands. If not, count it together with your child.
11. Take 3 thousand-cubes from the left felt piece and place it on the right felt piece to the left of the selected hundred-squares.
10. Point to the second addend and repeat the process. Invite your child to count out the unit beads, ten-bars, hundred-squares and thousand-cubes from the second addend, i.e. 2 unit beads, 1 ten-bar, 1 hundred-square and 2 thousand-cubes and place them on the right felt piece below the first addend's collected beads.
11. Add the beads together by placing the second addend's collected beads together with the first addend's collected beads and count it out loud.
12. Write the answer on the worksheet and read out the question and answer, for e.g. 3237+2112=5349
13. Invite your child to try with the next equation.
VARIATIONS:
1. Other materials can be substituted for the color bead stairs, such as buttons, counters, etc..
2. Try with vertical presentation of the equation.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
J tried this on 13 September 2014 (5Y6M8D). Seeing 4 digits, at first, he was a little confused with the place value of 10, 100 and 1000, but after a few rounds, he got the hang of it. But I hope to repeat this activity again next week.
