As a Parent, How Do We Deal With ISIS?

Advice from Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong

The threat and gruesome cruelty of ISIS is something worrying each time we open the newspapers. How do we deal with it, so that the world can be a better and safer place for our children? We long for the peace of the past before ISIS.

Here are some wise words from our PM Lee on how to regain peace... that is through showing them love and rehabilitating them back to the right path.

I quote from his article:

"We must go beyond that, to the religious dimension: to rehabilitate apprehended terrorists so that they understand the error of their ways and can be safely released from prison or detention...

We also need the social dimension: to integrate the former extremists back into society, so that they have family, friends and support, and are not ostracised or left at their wits' ends, and therefore vulnerable.

That the different races and religions in Singapore have lived together in harmony for 50 years is not incidental."

What lessons do I draw from here as a mom? How can I teach our Little FECS?

One key thing I learned from here is that it is important that we and our children extend our hands to the children from such background.

Instead of being fearful of them, we should do our best to create more playdates opportunities so that our children can interact with these children, and the children from such background are not ostracised from our so-called "mainstream" children.

Thank you PM Lee for sharing your wise insight.
